Are Indian Parents & Teachers ready for the AI Wave ?

There are many blog posts which are pending, which I would get to eventually but I decided to put down my thoughts after hosting a discussion on AI for Parents & Teachers. While preparing for the discussion I explored the current AI curriculum of CBSE board for class 9th, 10th, 11th to 12th and I was surprised to see it covers more than what most of the current experienced software engineers don’t know. Then I came across October’25 circular form Ministry of Education, India; that AI would be taught from Grade 3 onwards and it may not be even optional. This makes it very clear that the Government wants every student to be Artificial Intelligence literate and build applications on top of that. I am not fully aligned for this approach but that’s fine. Given that the policy is already in action I was thinking from the perspective of a Parent and a Teacher, on how they are going to cope up or react to the changes that would be unfolding in front of their eyes.

मेरे कई ब्लॉग पोस्ट अभी लंबित हैं, जिन्हें मैं अंततः लिखूँगा, लेकिन ‘अभिभावकों और शिक्षकों के लिए AI’ पर एक चर्चा आयोजित करने के बाद मैंने अपने विचारों को संक्षेप में रखने का निर्णय लिया। चर्चा की तैयारी करते समय, मैंने कक्षा 9वीं से 12वीं तक के लिए CBSE बोर्ड के वर्तमान AI पाठ्यक्रम को देखा और मैं यह देखकर हैरान रह गया कि इसमें वह सब कुछ शामिल है जो वर्तमान में अधिकांश अनुभवी सॉफ्टवेयर इंजीनियर भी नहीं जानते हैं। फिर मुझे शिक्षा मंत्रालय (भारत) का अक्टूबर 2025 का सर्कुलर मिला; जिसमें कहा गया है कि कक्षा 3 से ही AI पढ़ाया जाएगा और यह वैकल्पिक भी नहीं होगा। इससे यह बिल्कुल स्पष्ट हो जाता है कि सरकार चाहती है कि हर छात्र आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस में साक्षर हो और उसके ऊपर एप्लिकेशन तैयार करे। मैं इस दृष्टिकोण से पूरी तरह सहमत नहीं हूँ, लेकिन ठीक है। चूंकि नीति पहले से ही लागू है, मैं एक माता-पिता और शिक्षक के दृष्टिकोण से सोच रहा था कि वे अपनी आंखों के सामने होने वाले इन बदलावों का सामना कैसे करेंगे या उन पर कैसी प्रतिक्रिया देंगे।

One should look at AI as a wave, under which Quantum Computing, Robotics, Synthetic Biology, Nanotechnology, Semiconductors, Brain Machine Interfaces also come. It is definitely more than just getting the answer to search queries, creating images/videos, writing codes or what we generally see. This wave is going to affect each and every aspect of professional, social and family lives.

हमें AI को एक ऐसी लहर (Wave) के रूप में देखना चाहिए, जिसके अंतर्गत क्वांटम कंप्यूटिंग, रोबोटिक्स, सिंथेटिक बायोलॉजी, नैनोटेक्नोलॉजी, सेमीकंडक्टर्स और ब्रेन मशीन इंटरफेस भी आते हैं। यह निश्चित रूप से केवल खोज प्रश्नों (search queries) के उत्तर पाने, चित्र/वीडियो बनाने या कोड लिखने से कहीं अधिक है। यह लहर हमारे पेशेवर, सामाजिक और पारिवारिक जीवन के हर पहलू को प्रभावित करने वाली है।

Machines already know us, more than what we know about us or our friends and families, due to all the data we are sharing through our different social media accounts, by doing shopping online etc. Believe it or not machines are now so powerful that they can now look into people’s both conscious & subconscious mind and due to that people find a true companion in different AI applications. AI applications can now at will control/influence the decisions people make.

मशीनें हमारे बारे में, हमसे या हमारे दोस्तों और परिवारों से भी ज्यादा जानती हैं, क्योंकि हम सोशल मीडिया और ऑनलाइन शॉपिंग के जरिए अपना सारा डेटा साझा कर रहे हैं। मानिए या न मानिए, मशीनें अब इतनी शक्तिशाली हो गई हैं कि वे लोगों के चेतन और अवचेतन मन दोनों में झांक सकती हैं, और इसी कारण लोगों को विभिन्न AI एप्लिकेशनों में एक ‘सच्चा साथी’ मिल जाता है। AI एप्लिकेशन अब अपनी इच्छा से लोगों द्वारा लिए जाने वाले निर्णयों को नियंत्रित या प्रभावित कर सकते हैं।

The attention span of people is decreasing as we are outsourcing critical thinking to machines, which are making them smarter and us dumper. Whatever is most popular is considered to be true, without doing any self analysis. AI systems would want everyone to stay with-in their comfort zone only and then take advantage of the laziness.

लोगों का ध्यान केंद्रित करने का समय (attention span) कम हो रहा है क्योंकि हम तार्किक सोच (critical thinking) को मशीनों के भरोसे छोड़ रहे हैं, जो उन्हें स्मार्ट और हमें कमजोर बना रही है। बिना किसी आत्म-विश्लेषण के, जो सबसे लोकप्रिय है उसे ही सच मान लिया जाता है। AI सिस्टम चाहेंगे कि हर कोई केवल अपने ‘कम्फर्ट ज़ोन’ में रहे और फिर वे हमारे आलस्य का फायदा उठा सकें।

After setting up this context let us now come back to the main topic of the blog Are Indian Parents & Teachers ready for the AI Wave ?

इस संदर्भ के बाद, आइए ब्लॉग के मुख्य विषय पर वापस आते हैं: क्या भारतीय माता-पिता और शिक्षक AI लहर के लिए तैयार हैं?

Are Parents Ready WHEN :-

• children will trust AI more than them ?
• children will find answers to every question from AI than asking a parent from a very young age and dive further ?
• children will not follow/trust traditional values of Indian culture ?
• children will do all the artwork and creative work using AI ?
• children will voluntarily share all personal things going on in their life with AI ?
• children will not try to solve problems from the ground up ?

क्या माता-पिता तब तैयार हैं जब:

• बच्चे अपने माता-पिता से ज़्यादा AI पर भरोसा करेंगे?
• बच्चे बहुत छोटी उम्र से ही माता-पिता से पूछने के बजाय AI से हर सवाल का जवाब ढूँढेंगे और उसकी गहराई में उतरेंगे?
• बच्चे भारतीय संस्कृति के पारंपरिक मूल्यों का पालन या उन पर भरोसा नहीं करेंगे?
• बच्चे सारा कलात्मक और रचनात्मक कार्य AI का उपयोग करके करेंगे?
• बच्चे अपने जीवन की सभी व्यक्तिगत बातें स्वेच्छा से AI के साथ साझा करेंगे?
• बच्चे समस्याओं को बुनियादी स्तर (ground up) से हल करने का प्रयास नहीं करेंगे?

Are Teachers Ready WHEN :-

• student will finish all the homework/classwork using AI and teachers have to grade them ?
• students will not show respect to teachers ?
• student will know know all about the subjects before coming to the class ?
• student would question, what value addition you are doing when I have personalised tutor with me on-demand ?
• AI generates the lesson plans, questions, exam papers and teaches as well ?

क्या शिक्षक तब तैयार हैं जब:

• छात्र AI का उपयोग करके अपना सारा होमवर्क/क्लासवर्क पूरा करेंगे और शिक्षकों को उन्हें ग्रेड देना होगा?
• छात्र शिक्षकों के प्रति सम्मान नहीं दिखाएंगे?
• छात्र कक्षा में आने से पहले ही विषयों के बारे में सब कुछ जान लेंगे?
• छात्र सवाल करेंगे कि “जब मेरे पास ऑन-डिमांड व्यक्तिगत ट्यूटर मौजूद है, तो आप मेरी शिक्षा में क्या अतिरिक्त मूल्य (value addition) जोड़ रहे हैं?”
• AI ही पाठ योजना (lesson plans), प्रश्न और परीक्षा पत्र तैयार करेगा और साथ ही पढ़ाएगा भी?

These are some very uncomfortable questions for any Indian parents and teachers which we discussed and I am sure you would have yours. So how do they (including me) make themselves ready for this upcoming tsunami ?

ये किसी भी भारतीय माता-पिता और शिक्षकों के लिए कुछ बहुत ही असहज करने वाले प्रश्न हैं जिन पर हमने चर्चा की। तो वे (मुझ सहित) खुद को इस आने वाली सुनामी के लिए कैसे तैयार करें?

One option is to make children and respective teachers completely cut off from the AI changes. For most of the children, parents & teachers this would not be an option. Children would anyway learn AI from the schools and would master it for their use cases for sure. Only a few percent of teachers would get required upskilling in AI but even then how to handle children with AI at their disposal would be a challenge.

एक विकल्प यह है कि बच्चों और संबंधित शिक्षकों को AI परिवर्तनों से पूरी तरह से काट दिया जाए। लेकिन अधिकांश बच्चों, अभिभावकों और शिक्षकों के लिए यह कोई विकल्प नहीं होगा। बच्चे वैसे भी स्कूलों से AI सीखेंगे और अपने उपयोग के लिए इसमें महारत हासिल कर लेंगे। केवल कुछ प्रतिशत शिक्षकों को ही AI में आवश्यक अपस्किलिंग मिल पाएगी, लेकिन तब भी उनके पास मौजूद AI से लैस बच्चों को संभालना एक चुनौती होगी।

Parents with no real knowledge of AI would keep wondering what is happening around and they may start questioning their upbringing. In my opinion parents with technical AI knowledge would still find it difficult to manage their children unless they understand the complete psychology on how AI affects our brain. 

AI के वास्तविक ज्ञान के बिना माता-पिता हैरान होते रहेंगे कि उनके आसपास क्या हो रहा है और वे अपनी परवरिश पर सवाल उठाना शुरू कर सकते हैं। मेरी राय में, तकनीकी AI ज्ञान रखने वाले माता-पिता को भी अपने बच्चों को प्रबंधित करना मुश्किल होगा जब तक कि वे इस पूरे मनोविज्ञान को नहीं समझते कि AI हमारे मस्तिष्क को कैसे प्रभावित करता है।

With my knowledge so far, I am guessing parents and teachers need to work on two fronts, one is to understand the basics of AI on how it works and second front would be to bring in behavioural changes to deal with AI Generation Children. 

अब तक के मेरे ज्ञान के अनुसार, मेरा अनुमान है कि माता-पिता और शिक्षकों को दो मोर्चों पर काम करने की आवश्यकता है: पहला, AI की बुनियादी बातों को समझना कि यह कैसे काम करता है, और दूसरा मोर्चा ‘AI जनरेशन’ के बच्चों के साथ व्यवहार करने के लिए व्यवहारिक बदलाव लाना होगा।
