Continuing my quest to learn and play more games I ended up attending the #Play14 Bengaluru event last minute between 8th – 10th Nov’24. It turned out to be an awesome break from the tech and other things which keeps me busy. More than 2 days just went like that and I am still missing it.
I was not sure what to expect but when I saw following posters as I entered the venue on 8th evening, I sensed the vibe that I am at the right place.
On 8th evening we played some ice breaker games to get to know each other better and got briefed about the what to expect in the next two days. On both 9th and 10th, we started the day with the market place, in which anyone can pitch about the game the they would like to facilitate and requests others to join a given time.
One would like to attend each game but unfortunately that’s not possible. Some of the games which I ended attending are :-
- Your Hero Brand by Miriam Korula
- How to tell the interactive stories with Dice by Aravind Sundar
- A world about the Cloud by Varun Manoharan
- 25 ways to turbo charge your Business by Wan
- Pattern by Ricardo Fernndes
- Sticky Finger (Escape Room) by Aravind Sundar
- Make a game in 45 mins by Bharti Maru
- Train Negotiation by Ricardo Fernndes
Apart from above we would have played close to 10 filler high energy games.
For me, my primary intention was to learn about the games which I can play with my children, as I think games are great way to open up with them and spend time together. Other intention was to learn the process to creating new games. From the event I got the pointers for both of them and rest is on me to take my learnings forward.
At the end of the event, we did a retro in silence. That was an experience in which we listed down the feedback about the event and each other in writing. One needs to be there to experience that. The event was well organised. It ran almost on time and there was not a single dull moment. Kudos to all the organisers and co-players to making it an unforgettable one.
Such events reminds us that we can teach and learn core human values while playing and having fun, like we did in the Train Negotiation game. There is no need to be too serious. Just go with the game & flow, and cherish the outcome.
In the world of AI, fake news, inequalities and un-necessary excess consumptions; physical activities and in-person games are going to keep us sane. So keep that child alive in you and keep playing.
