{"id":969,"date":"2013-10-07T13:30:16","date_gmt":"2013-10-07T13:30:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.neependra.net\/?p=969"},"modified":"2013-10-07T13:30:16","modified_gmt":"2013-10-07T13:30:16","slug":"how-relevant-are-the-ads-we-see","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neependra.net\/index.php\/2013\/10\/07\/how-relevant-are-the-ads-we-see\/","title":{"rendered":"How relevant are the ads, we see ?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As mentioned in the <a href=\"http:\/\/wp.neependra.net\/?p=965\">previous blog post<\/a> I have been doing\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/course\/googlemedia\">Understanding Media by Understanding Google<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>course on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\">Coursera<\/a>\u00a0and as part of second peer graded assignment I have to log\u00a0the next 20 ads I encounter from Google, whether as the result of a search on google.com or through one of its partner sites and\u00a0summarize what those ads get right about me and my interests, including at least one example,\u00a0and what you believe they get wrong.<\/p>\n<p>So I logged them and here they are:-<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0AlVUJuil1-urdFVPNGNWYUo4cHVfM1RxblByenRYa0E&amp;usp=sharing\">https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheet\/ccc?key=0AlVUJuil1-urdFVPNGNWYUo4cHVfM1RxblByenRYa0E&amp;usp=sharing<\/a><\/p>\n<p>and to summarize.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I \u00a0:-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211; am male<br \/>\n&#8211; am married<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0reside in Bangalore, India<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0work for a Linux based company<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Interested in cloud technology<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0have been searching for training in hadoop and a cars using Google<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0have been searching for books in flipkart<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0fly often<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0do banking<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0buy consumer goods<\/p>\n<p><strong>From the above list following advertisements are right about me and my interests :-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0Consumer Electronics<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Training<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Air Travel Agent<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Online retailer<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Banking<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Cloud Product<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Online yellow pages<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Car dealer<\/p>\n<p><strong>Following advertisements are somehow interest me :-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0Hardware Vendor (Dell)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Beverages<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Tyres<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Real State<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Greetings, Gifts<\/p>\n<p><strong>Following advertisements do not interest me and are wrong :-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&#8211;\u00a0Matrimony (as I am already married)<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0Forex Trading<\/p>\n<p>If I look at the\u00a0advertisement more closely then just on one page I am seeing ads about real estate, travel, retailer, matrimony, gifts. \u00a0Just look how commercial a web page has become. And on top that we now see ads based on personal needs, preferences. This is what can be called as <strong>serving the long tail. \u00a0<\/strong>Web companies are collecting more and more data about us and we giving them for free.
