{"id":829,"date":"2013-03-05T12:46:40","date_gmt":"2013-03-05T12:46:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.neependra.net\/?p=829"},"modified":"2013-03-05T12:46:40","modified_gmt":"2013-03-05T12:46:40","slug":"open-datacamp-bangalore13","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neependra.net\/index.php\/2013\/03\/05\/open-datacamp-bangalore13\/","title":{"rendered":"Open DataCamp &#8211; Bangalore&#8217;13"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I attended and gave a part of talk at <a href=\"http:\/\/odc.datameet.org\/odcblr2013\/\">Open Data Camp, Bangalore 2013<\/a>, which was scheduled on 2nd and 3rd \u00a0March&#8217;13. ~200 people participated in the camp from different fields. \u00a0I met lot\u00a0of smart people and had a great time.\u00a0Sessions I attended :-<\/p>\n<p><strong>Visualizing Politics: <a href=\"http:\/\/s-anand.net\/\">S Anand<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nAnand took the data from 2004 Lok Sabha election, which he got from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/eci.nic.in\/eci_main1\/index.aspx\">ECI <\/a>website\u00a0and showed lot of interesting facts and stats on the India&#8217;s map. His\u00a0presenstation is available<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slideshare.net\/gramener\/visualising-politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> here.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As usual there was lot lot to learn from his talk.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/data.gov.in\/\">data.gov.in <\/a>&#8211; Alka Mishra<\/strong><br \/>\nAlka gave overview about <a href=\"http:\/\/data.gov.in\/\">data.gov.in,<\/a> which is an Indian Government initiative to\u00a0open-up data from different\u00a0government\u00a0departments. She shared the policies and\u00a0processes through which data.gov.in is collecting datasets from different\u00a0departments.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/data.gov.in\/\">data.gov.in <\/a>is currently working with Central Government but some of the states also\u00a0shown interest.<\/p>\n<p>She understood the concerns of the data\u00a0enthusiasts\u00a0that most of time, the data on the\u00a0government websites is not in\u00a0usable\u00a0format. She said now there are such\u00a0polices\u00a0that the\u00a0different\u00a0departments\u00a0have to submit the data in a standardize format.She urged for more participation from the citizens on the data.gov.in. She said that we\u00a0can request for any specific datasets.\u00a0Her session was following by a panel discussion &#8220;Why Open Data is Good for Gov and Citizens alike&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Big Data and Hadoop in Indian Context &#8211; Mohan Kumar<\/strong><br \/>\nSpeaker mentioned some interesting facts and have an overview of Big Data and Hadoop.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Panel Discussion: What has Open Data got to with UIDAI? &#8211; <a href=\"in.linkedin.com\/in\/sunilaabraham\">Sunil Abraham<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/anivar.net\/\">Anivar Aravind <\/a>and Anant Maringanti.<\/strong><br \/>\nThis was most interesting session I attended at ODC. It came as total surprise to me.\u00a0The panelists discussed whats not so open about the UIDAI<\/p>\n<p><strong>An Introduction to Apache Hadoop &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mrinalwadhwa\">Mrinal Wadhwa<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nOn day-2, I attended half day session on Apache Hadoop. Mrinal gave really good overview on Hadoop.\u00a0For what tasks we should use Hadoop and when we are better off with RDBMS. I enjoyed this session\u00a0as there was lot to learn.<\/p>\n<p>I gave following talk with <a href=\"www.rajeshkasturirangan.com\">Rajesh K<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/meerak\">Meera K<\/a>, and Vineet.<br \/>\n<strong>Public Problem Solving using Data: Lessons from the Daksh Survey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"www.dakshindia.org\">\u00a0DAKSH <\/a>\u00a0is an independent, professional, apolitical, not-for-profit organization based in Bangalore, which surveyed people of Karnataka to see how their respective MLA performed. Through Rajesh I came to know that they needed someone to analyse the collected data and come up with a score card for each MLA. I volunteered and did the analysis. Following shows the overall exercise we did as a group:-<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/neependra.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/flowDaksh.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-831\" alt=\"flowDaksh\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/neependra.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/flowDaksh.png?resize=450%2C462\" width=\"450\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/neependra.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/flowDaksh.png?resize=996%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 996w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/neependra.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/flowDaksh.png?resize=292%2C300&amp;ssl=1 292w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/neependra.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/flowDaksh.png?resize=768%2C789&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/neependra.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/flowDaksh.png?w=1479&amp;ssl=1 1479w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The score card for each MLA was published in<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vijaykarnatakaepaper.com\/\"> Vijay Karnatak<\/a>a, which is a leading Kanada News Paper. \u00a0Rajesh started the talk \u00a0by the introduction to Public Problem Solving. After that Vineet introduced the audience to Daksh. Then \u00a0I share the steps which I used to analyse the collected Data. Later Meera showed how <a href=\"http:\/\/bangalore.citizenmatters.in\/\">Citizen Matters<\/a> is using the results collected from above exercise, which a very small part of overall effort which her team is putting to collect the stats for each MLA. The audience were surprised to how people from different fields came\u00a0together\u00a0and worked on this.<\/p>\n<p>Following is a picture of mine showing the score-card \u00a0of MLAs which was published on Vijay Karnataka.
