{"id":619,"date":"2012-07-16T13:14:45","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T13:14:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wp.neependra.net\/?p=619"},"modified":"2012-07-16T13:14:45","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T13:14:45","slug":"the-fifth-elephant-pune-data-hacknight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/neependra.net\/index.php\/2012\/07\/16\/the-fifth-elephant-pune-data-hacknight\/","title":{"rendered":"The Fifth Elephant \u00bb Pune Data Hacknight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I came to know the <a href=\"http:\/\/beta.hacknight.in\/fifthelephant\/pune2012\">Pune hacknight<\/a> from the twitter and after digging some \u00a0more on the net I came to know about<a href=\"http:\/\/fifthelephant.in\/\">\u00a0The Fifth Elephant<\/a>\u00a0 conference in Bangalore.<\/p>\n<p>I did not had any prior working background about the big data but I always\u00a0found it interesting. In my current profile at STEC, I anyalize the performance numbers, so I thought hacknight would be the right place to place to get started.<\/p>\n<p>I registered myself and waited eagerly for the event. On the day I reached there at the Venue on time. I saw some familiar faces like <a href=\"http:\/\/tuxdna.wordpress.com\/\">Saleem<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/allsortsofshrink.blogspot.in\/\">Shreyank<\/a>.\u00a0For others I was meeting for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>Once everyone was in we had a round of introduction and discussed the<a href=\"http:\/\/beta.hacknight.in\/fifthelephant\/pune2012\"> ideas posted\u00a0on the website<\/a>. We then listed down the ideas for which we had the datasets. I found following ideas interesting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Travel Recommender<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">IEEE ICDM Kaggle Competition<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Automatic Twitter Movie Reviews Analyzer<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: left;\">Movie Star Social Media Popularity Meter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a title=\"hacknight by neependra, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/neependra\/7582448352\/\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7268\/7582448352_7584c3139a.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"hacknight\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I decided to work on the &#8220;IEEE ICDM Kaggle Competition&#8221; with<a href=\"https:\/\/plus.google.com\/109295121670885594713\"> Jaidev<\/a>. It took some time to figure out what the exact problem is and what the training sample is.<\/p>\n<p>There was a listing of the products in a <em>json<\/em> file and reviews of the products\u00a0in another\u00a0<em> json<\/em> file. We have to the match the reviews with products. Rather \u00a0than jumping into writing any code for reading the file I decided to look at \u00a0the data more care fully. After spending some time on that I saw there we have to \u00a0write some machine learning tool. I do not have much idea \u00a0in that area. Jaidev gave me reference material on that.<\/p>\n<p>I was not how I should proceed further so I decided to not to spend more time on the dataset. I started looking for more basic definition like what is bigdata, \u00a0what does data science means, why it becoming more important etc. . I found \u00a0it very fascinated\u00a0that what all we can do with the data.<\/p>\n<p>Sometime in the night <a href=\"http:\/\/in.linkedin.com\/in\/nikhillanjewar\">Nikhil<\/a> shared some info about group databases and neo4j, which I found is very useful. Shreyank told us what we can do with the <a href=\"http:\/\/d3js.org\/\">D3.<\/a> He pulled out his friends list from the Facebook and their connectivity with each other.\u00a0Later he showed very nice graphs using the data which he collected. I was amazed to see them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hasgeek.com\/\">hasgeek<\/a> has done the great job in organising the event. The venue was centrally located, spacious and had good internet connection. We had plenty of snacks, soft and energy drinks.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone was free to work on any datasets, which is good.
